I found my visit to Catherine Opie’s To Be Seen exhibition at the National Galleries in Edinburgh really eye opening. I particularly liked watching the video of Catherine explaining the exhibition and hearing her talk about her ideas and the reasons behind the work. It made the exhibition feel more personal and helped me understand the thought process behind how she had put everything together.

I found the way she brought together older, well-known artworks with her own photography really interesting. Some of her photographs felt like a modern response to, or interpretation of, the older paintings, which created a connection between the past and the present. I also really liked how inclusive and diverse the exhibition felt, as it showed different people, identities and experiences. I thought the way Catherine had combined traditional artworks with contemporary photography made the exhibition feel much more relevant and accessible to a modern audience.
